High-level leadership symposium undergo to build university leaders and management skill

NewsThe high level symposium was organized by Ethiopian ministry of Education, in collaboration with Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa Science and Technology University, University of South Africa KwaZulu-Natal and St. Mary University at Addis Ababa Intercontinental Hotel, from April 19-21/2017.

The symposiums was mainly aimed at exploding challenges at universities and enhancing the leadership and management skills of the executives of the current and future Ethiopian higher education institutions as well as discussing research findings on the current status of Ethiopia’s higher education.

Moreover, the symposium focused on presenting, elaborating and analyzing the state of higher education in the contemporary and its relevance and significance to Ethiopia’s phenomenal growth in the sector-and its future trajectory.

Opening the symposium, DR. Samuel Kifle, State minister for higher education sub-sector acknowledged that Ethiopian government's commitment to expand higher education for sustainable socio-economic development in the country.

Three levels of interventions namely: short-term plan, mid-term plan, and long-term plan meetings were been organized for university leadership on various current agendas for narrowing skill gaps seen during work implementation of Ethiopian universities, said the state minister.

He emphasized that to achieve the mission of developing a problem-solving, research-driven, and a community service providing higher education institutions, university leaders should revitalize and enhance their skills.

He also added that to attain the national vision of becoming a middle economic income earning countries of the world by 2015 and the fifth education sector development program as well as the second growth and transformational plan, the higher education leaders’ commitment plays irreplaceable role .

As to him, High level leaders’ capacity building at higher education sub-sector is a prime agenda in ensuring higher quality education.

NewsSpeaking at the symposiums, prof. Damtew Teferra, Leader, International Network for Education in Africa and Higher Education Training and Development, University of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa on his part said that high commitment of university leaders and valuable ownership of community imperative collaborative role in delivering equitable quality higher education to take part in accelerating the socio-economic development of the country.

Experts and relevant leaders were drawn from the ministry of education, public higher education institutions and Africa countries higher education as well as international education sector institutions.
